This weekend we raked up the leaves in the garden – a long overdue task that I hadn’t appreciated would give me quite such a thorough workout! Still, it gave me a chance to have a good look round at what was going on.
It is lovely to look at the compost bin, which is teaming with worms. A tuber that had been thrown away was also doing quite well in there, so we rescued it for the council compost instead. Behind the apple tree I raked over a huge ball of mushrooms – golden orange and cream – that I’m sure shouldn’t be thriving on our lawn. And the Granny Smith’s tree is still hanging on to its apples, refusing to allow them to ripen and fall.
But there were odder things afoot.
The potted crocuses are beginning to nose their way out of the soil.
There is a dandelion trying to flower.
There are beautiful blooms on the clematis.
And we picked the last of our cucumbers.
Bearing in mind it is the beginning of December, should this really be happening?
